In today's digital world, image constitutes a huge percentage of data communication. Hence to ensure better security, encryption of image is necessary for transmitting through digital channels. The more unintelligible the encrypted image, the more secure it is. This paper proposes a method to encrypt and decrypt images with the help of linear feedback shift registers (LFSR). An LFSR produces a pseudo-random number. In this paper, the output of the LFSR is further randomized and a cryptographically secure LFSR is obtained. This makes the final encrypted image even more unpredictable. The image is encrypted by a two-level process. Re-arrangement of pixels is done in the first step and in the second step substitution is performed. The analysis of the experimental results indicates that the proposed scheme is robust and secure.
