Development of NEC7720, Origin of Programmable DSP Chip
Takao Nishitani · 2017
A programmable DSP chip, having a built-in 16×16 bit parallel multiplier, appeared from NEC about 40 years ago. Since then, many LSI manufacturers challenged to this field. Signals to be processed by such chips were from telephone voices at the beginning. Soon Audio and Video signals were processed. Recent trends of the programmable DSP applications include neural signals in the artificial neural networks. The paper describes the role of programmable DSP chips and future trends, based on the experiences of the world first programmable DSP chip development and of those of the successive DSP chips.
