Some remarks on the beating efficiency of the photomixing techniques

Nastran Mansour · 1987

Two techniques are used to detect scattered light. These may be classified as the direct photodetection and the photomixing techniques. The latter is the most commonly used because it gives better S/N ratio. However, it requires stringent spatial requirements. advantages and disadvantages, and S/N ratio formulas of the two techniques are presented. The beating efficiency is calculated for the case of mixing of two plane waves and the results are given. The beating efficiency of two spherical waves originated from two point sources, is calculated for various shapes of the photodetector. It was found that the beating efficiency is a function of the detector shape and the incidence angle of the two light beams on the detector.
