Information technology services have undergone a revolution in the last decade, as the demand for services like cloud storage, mobile applications, portable electronics and high speed data are exponentially increasing. As we move towards a data-centric environment, it is of paramount importance that the security provided should intercept and block all possible threats. These security threats are continually evolving to circumvent the immediate countermeasures implemented. In addition to the existing type of malicious computer programs like virus, Trojans, and worms, a new malware called as ransomware is spawning across the computing world for gaining monetary compensation. Presently, numerous types of ransomware are infecting personal and commercial internet users globally. The ransomware is a type of malware that enters into a host machine via a malicious email, link or executable program. This malware encrypts critical user data, and the only way to recover the data is by paying a ransom using a cryptocurrency. This paper will focus on learning the intricate working of crypto locker ransomware using asymmetric encryption and Software Defined Networking. The time taken for encryption of files will be observed for different data sizes and methods will be proposed to mitigate the threat.
