Estimating Available Bandwidth Using Overloading Stream with Variable Packet Size

Cao Yu, Liang Qian, Ding Lianghui, Feng Yang · 2018

End to end available bandwidth estimation is required for areas such as bandwidth dependent applications, quality of service management and traffic engineering. Available bandwidth estimation methods have been proposed quite a lot past years, e.g. Pathload and Pathchirp. These methods focus on observation of delay and finding a transition point to estimate available bandwidth, resulting in heavy overhead loads on the network, sometimes loss of accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new method based on a statistical model for network path to estimate available bandwidth. This method estimates available bandwidth using an overload stream with variable packet size(linear increased packet size), requiring no prior knowledge of network path. Evaluation results show that our method performs better in terms of intrusiveness, estimation duration and accuracy.
