A Lightweight Edge Computing Platform Integration Video Services

Jian Wang, Yihong Hu, Hongxing Li, Guochu Shou · 2018

In Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, edge computing, one emerging paradigm, becomes a feasible supplementary solution under the cloud architecture by increasing computing and storage resources available at the network edge. Considering the performance of cloud architecture in terms of response delay and communication burden under the IoT, simply relying on centralized cloud computing is often not the best strategy. To solve the issue, we propose a lightweight edge computing platform relying on the emerging lightweight virtualization and the Edge Intelligent Server(EIS) which integrates computing and networking capabilities. In addition, we design a scheme of video services based on the platform and provide performance evaluations. The results show that EIS has low network forwarding delay and cost-effective collaborative computing capabilities. The platform effectively reduces the response time of video services and improves Quality of Experience(QoE) of users.
