Collaboration environments for distributed engineering : development of a prototype system

Peter Törlind, Mårten Stenius, Mathias Johanson, Peter Jeppsson · 1999

In this paper a model for collaboration between engineers in a distributed virtual environment, based upon a suite of specialised computer tools is presented. The system uses the distributed virtual reality system DIVE, which has been customised to allow interoperability with existing CAD systems. Other tools implemented to support information exchange in a product development project include audio-/videoconferencing software, shared workspace systems for document sharing, application sharing tools, shared whiteboard applications and more. The paper discusses the components of a prototype collaboration environment and how these components together form a coherent whole from both a technical standpoint as well as in respect to usability issues.
