Performance of Container Network Technologies in Cloud Environments

Ryan Bankston, Jinhua Guo · 2018

Container technology is ubiquitous for software systems deployed in the cloud. Container networking between hosts is an integral part of any containerized software system that exists on more than one host. While local networking performance has been explored in previous literature, performance of networking technologies that allow containers to communicate between different hosts deployed in cloud environments has not. In this paper, we explore the network performance and system impact of different container networks on popular public clouds using iperf3. Our results show that for 1 Gbps network requirements, there are only minor differences across cloud platforms and network technologies. However, for network requirements exceeding 5 Gbps or requiring encryption there are significant differences.
