This paper presents a working prototype for a lightweight smart home simulation system using agent modelling. Smart homes – context-aware environments that adapt to their owners’ needs – are one of the main consumer application areas for the Internet of Things paradigm and one of its biggest promises for improving the quality life. However smart home solutions today lack interoperability, being caught in proprietary digital ecosystems, and flexibility – ability to adapt to different owner use cases. Smart home simulation systems are a way of testing different smart home configurations – placing of sensors and actuators – that solve the personalized needs of the owners with minimum investment. We have developed a smart home simulation system using agent-based modelling as a side project in the Eurostars iLight project which has the aim of creating an indoor monitoring system using energy-efficient smart luminaires. The simulation system also contains a graphical editor for creating maps, placing objects, sensors and agents. Currently the system can design indoor plans and simulate the paths of owners with different profiles and needs.
