The grand challenges of science and industry that were driving computing and communications created corresponding challenges in information storage and retrieval. The project result was an evaluation of a high-performance storage architecture testbed assembled from off-the-shelf commercially available hardware as shown in Figure 1. Software enhancements to the UniTree Storage System software were required, and other software was developed, such as the High Performance Storage System (HPSS), to meet the project's goals. The NSL architecture led to greater productivity in the use of high-performance computing systems and led the way for the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI).
