An economic and sustainable provision and use of cloud computing requires efficient decision support and policies for cloud providers and consumers, respectively. Therefore, the application of metaheuristics for solving complex real-world optimization problems in the area of cloud computing has become increasingly important. This special issue compiles a number of excellent contributions advancing the state-ofthe-art regarding the application of metaheuristics in cloud environments. Its first part covers optimization problems in the context of cloud resource management, in particular with respect to energy-aware resource provisioning, allocation, and consolidation schemes. The second part of this special issue is specifically focused on the consumers' perspective by presenting optimization approaches for supporting the selection of virtual machines as well as placement decisions.Overall, all articles present important insights from a methodological standpoint based on extensive computational experiments and benchmark studies.
