A High-level Operating System for Symmetric Massively Parallel Architectures

The R-Team--machine (RM) is a software architecture for symmetric multi-client hardware. RM concepts are a mixture of classical blackboard systems and network operating systems. The system is designed in particular for the modeling and implementation of concurrent iterative heuristics. We use the JANUS motor controller as an example to show how the RM can be applied to control a system of many complex heuristics running in parallel on one or more clients. 1 Introduction The R-Team--machine (RM) is the result of the incremental design of a robotic control architecture consisting of many heuristic and adaptive methods. Although the system was designed explicitly for the robotics purpose, we found that it is also applicable to many other kinds of teambased architectures.
