Logarithmic Tone Mapping Algorithm Based on Block Mapping Fusion

Junlang Tan, Yihua Huang, Kai You Wang · 2018

Tone mapping algorithms can compress high dynamic range images into low dynamic range images and solve the problem of mismatch between high dynamic range images and normal display devices. Traditional logarithmic tone mapping algorithm has the advantages of high computational efficiency and more natural effect, etc., but the logarithmic tone mapping algorithm has limited compression range, which may easily result in the loss of image details. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a logarithmic tone mapping algorithm based on block mapping fusion. Firstly, the high dynamic range image is divided into several blocks with the same size, and then the blocks are mapping respectively with logarithmic tone mapping algorithm so that the luminance values can be mapped to a wider interval to increase the contrast. Secondly the block images are fused to eliminate the unnatural phenomenon among the blocks. Finally, the details of the fused image are enhanced through the bilateral filter. Compared with other algorithms, this algorithm can preserve the rich details of the image, and the mapped images have no artifacts and high naturalness.
