Visual Question Answering Agent with Visual and Textual Attention

Advancements in computer vision, natural language processing and deep learning techniques have resulted in the creation of intelligent systems that have achieved impressive results in the visually grounded tasks such as image captioning and visual question answering (VQA). VQA is a task that can be used to evaluate a system's capacity to understand an image. It requires an intelligent agent to answer a natural language question about an image. The agent must ground the question into the image and return a natural language answer. One of the latest techniques proposed to tackle this task is the attention mechanism. It allows the agent to focus on specific parts of the input in order to answer the question. In this paper we propose a novel long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture that uses dual attention to focus on specific question words and parts of the input image in order to generate the answer. We evaluate our solution on the recently proposed Visual 7W dataset and show that it performs better than state of the art. Additionally, we propose two new question types for this dataset in order to improve model evaluation. We also make a qualitative analysis of the results and show the strength and weakness of our agent.
