Discrete-valued inversion of IP data using guided FCM clustering

Constraining geophysical inversions using petrophysical information has been an important and fruitful approach to obtaining improved physical property models that are consistent with known geology. One form of such information is known and nearly constant physical property values. Incorporating these values into inversion as discrete-valued constraints can produce highly resolved models and may help compensate for the decreased resolving power with depth when only surface geophysical data are available. We apply a guided fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm to the 3D inversion of induced polarization data with such discrete-valued constraints, and examine the benefits of this approach. The results show well delineated bodies with improved chargeability values and resolution at depth.
