Visibility Enhancement Technique for Hazy Scenes

The visibility of outdoor images becomes highly reduced due to the inclement weather conditions like haze, fog and sandstorms. During bad weather condition, the poor visibility causes serious problems in transportation systems such as travelling vehicle data recorders, traffic maintenance systems and intelligent transportation systems. The transportation systems would also operate even under difficult weather conditions. Vehicle Accidents are large in number due to the poor visibility. So in order to avoid these road image degradation problems, an effective visibility enhancement technique for haze removal by using single image is proposed. Dark channel prior technique is used for obtaining the transmission map. Bilateral filter is used for preserving edges in the transmission map. The laplacian distribution value is used to estimate the sufficient transmission map and also for obtaining the true color of the hazy input image. The proposed method enhances the quality of the hazy input image. The quality of the enhanced image is measured by means of performance metric such as PSNR, e metric and a metric.
