Groundwater contamination by organic compounds results from two mechanisms: migration of the free product (phase flow) and migration of dissolved components in the water (species transport). Numerical simulation is computationally intensive involving the iterative simultaneous solution of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations over fine time and space discretizations. Efficient parallel computations can be used when an alternating direction solution scheme is employed. The paper describes a highly efficient collocation based alternating direction algorithm which relies on matrix factorization to achieve spatial decoupling.
