Yet under normal conditions we do not have the subjective impression of seeing bits of words, but rather, whole words. This impression is partly the result of the fact that, though we are unaware of it, the eye can move around within the word if more detail about certain of its parts is needed. In addition, the fact that the letters viewed must form a known word, and the fact that this word must fit into the given linguistic context, may in many cases make extra eye fixations unnecessary.
