Unveiling Intrinsic Locality Properties of Reed-Solomon Codes with Applications to Distributed Storage

In this paper, we study intrinsic locality properties of non-systematic Reed Solomon (RS) codes. We demonstrate that for RS codes encoding 4 or 5 symbols, the locality of a subset of input symbols can be strictly improved by a judicious choice of elements (and their powers) that constitute the standard RS encoding matrix, without giving up any MDS properties of the code.
