A Metaphor-driven Interactive Multimedia Simulation for Teaching and Learning of Programming Concepts

Tebatso Gorgina Moape, Sunday Olusegun Ojo, Etienne Van Wyk · IST-Africa Week Conference · 2018

Teaching and learning difficulties associated with programming concepts are widely acknowledged. A key factor is the reality of abstractness and intangibility of these concepts, which makes programming to demand complex cognitive skills such as problem solving, analytical planning and reasoning skills. Towards addressing the programming learning difficulties, pedagogical use of metaphors has been proposed in the literature. Based on a triangulation of theories of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), and Structure Mapping Theory (SMT) an Interactive Multimedia Simulation (IMS) tool, called MyProCoTutor (My Programming Concepts Tutor) is developed, for the teaching and learning of programming concepts. Using the ATM metaphor with the programming concepts of Data Processing and Control Structures as the target concepts, the practical utility and technical feasibility of the IMS prototype tool is demonstrated.
