Coding With a Piano: the First Phase of the Codeklavier's Development
Anne Veinberg, Felipe Ignacio Noriega · University of Michigan Library Repository · 2018
The CodeKlavier is a system which enables the performer to live code through playing the piano. In this paper, we discuss the system’s development and the first two prototypes, “hello world” and Motippets. The system analyses the pianist’s MIDI input through both direct and gestural mappings. Live coding is done in the SuperCollider audio programming language and the pianist is required to simultaneously play and code as one artistic expression throughout a performance. The paper includes a discussion of existing alternative interfaces in live coding and our motivation for the project, a technical explanation of the system, and the implication of the system use on both the live coding and pianistic practice. We finish with an explanation and discussion of the project’s future outlook.
