Pietro Torasso, the early years: Speech and language processing

At the beginning of his career and for about ten years, Pietro Torasso made fundamental contributions to speech and language processing for Italian. This article describes those early contributions and includes some of the lessons, scientific and otherwise, that many of his students from thirty yea rs ago still carry with them.
