When more may not be better: Toward cost-efficient CDN selection

Guoming Tang, Huan Wang, Kui Wu, Deke Guo, Chong Zhang · 2018

Selecting suitable content delivery networks (CDNs) is critical for any content provider (CP). Normally, a CP chooses the CDN that has a larger point of presence (PoP) footprint and thus is believed to have a better performance. In this paper, we investigate if smaller, cheaper CDNs could have a comparable performance to that of big ones. We develop a method for CDN selection and perform a case study using real-world CDN demand trace data over a synthetic PoP network. Our study would help the CP better understand the intricate relationship between the number of PoPs and the performance of CDN.
