Servers used in certain applications need to be robust in design, and a critical part of a server is the Power Supply Unit (PSU) which is required to be reliable, efficient and economical. Automated testing for PSUs is necessary, however, it can be challenging, laborious and expensive. In an effort of making this process flexible and economical, this paper focuses on automation of testing PSUs used in servers suggesting an alternative approach without using commercially available “PSU automated testing solutions” software and proprietary hardware. We replace the expensive system test bench softwares, such as LabVIEW, with a more generic open-source programming language, Python. A setup to automate PSU testing is successfully demonstrated. This approach is a full-fledged programmable solution that could be adapted widely to any product that uses power converters and needs testing irrespective of industry or domain.
