THE EFFECT OF GUESSING ON THE QUALITY OF PERSONNEL AND COUNSELING DECISIONS

Abstract : In the effect of guessing on the quality of personnel and counseling decisions, the fundamental probability distributions for total test scores are derived by assuming that each person knows the answers to some items and guesses on the remaining items. Analysis of a 10-item test shows that guessing levels encountered in practice (a) seriously degrade the value of selection, placement, and counseling decisions, (b) significantly impair test reliability and validity, and (c) magnify the influence of testwiseness.
