Many large business critical systems suffer from poor performance due to their complexity and structural features. Therefore, the need to maintain the acceptable level of database performance in this domain is crucial. With this paper, we begin a series of studies on performance problems and propose a holistic approach to troubleshooting and tuning business critical systems. In consideration of there is no one-size-fits-all solution for a specific problem, we extend tradition methodology for troubleshooting and performance through additional procedures for monitoring historical events, specific prediction and optimization tools and techniques on the side of database specialists as seamless. A case study from a real hospital information system to diagnose and troubleshoot database performance problems and SQL troubleshooting as a part of the general methodology is discussed.
