Thumbcode: A Device-Independent Digital Sign Language

This paper describes Thumbcode, a device-independent digital sign language. We list and discuss requirements, then describe Thumbcode and explain how it meets these requirements. We propose several approaches to the machine recognition of Thumbcode, and conclude with a brief discussion of potential ergonomic health issues.
