Despite of huge growth of WSN applications, these networks are prone to number of security attacks. Again, deployment of these networks in hazardous and unattended environment along with the resource constraints makes the design/deployment issue more critical than traditional infrastructure based networks. Recently, many researchers discuss on the security issues and challenge involved in WSN as the limited resources of nodes cant provide a desired level of security by itself. Though many studies present many potential security issues, most of the contents are discussed in isolation of each other. Keeping this in mind, trying to provide a clear picture of this vast area, attempt has been made to present the major security issues that consider the probable attacks and how it can be detected prior to the attack and various defense mechanisms are discussed in this paper. Finally, to be very specific, denial-of-service (DoS) attack and its defense and detection mechanisms are the major contributions of this paper as DoS attack can be performed at each layer of WSN.
