A new planar mechanism design for path generation

A new 1-DOF planar mechanism which combines a four-bar linkage, two slider-crank mechanisms, a simple gear train and an elementary planetary gear train is proposed for planar path generation. This new mechanism can be regarded as a four-bar linkage with a length-variable driving link and three moving pivots. The combination of a slider-crank mechanism, a simple gear train and an elementary planetary gear train serves as the driving link of the proposed mechanism and makes the length of driving link variable. The other combination of a simple gear train and a slider-crank mechanism serves as the fixed pivot of the proposed mechanism and makes it become a moving pivot. The required planar path trajectories are able to be generated by dimensional synthesis of the proposed mechanism. The structure, kinematic analysis and optimal dimensional synthesis of the proposed mechanism are discussed. An example is provided to demonstrate the proposed design method.
