Machine translation from African languages to English

D.G. Kourie, WJ van den Heever, G. Deon Oosthuizen · Unisa Institutional Repository (University of South Africa) · 1992

This paper describes how a machine translation system, LEXICA, has been used and adapted to translate from African languages to English. Results with Tswana provide comprehensible translations that, although not necessarily flawless, can be used by an individual to assimilate the meaning of a text in, say, an industrial context. LEXICA itself is parcelled as a translator's workbench, offering an environment in which such assimilable translations can easily be enhanced to conformed to standards required for dissemination to a general audience.
