Cloud and Fog Computing in the Internet of Things
Daniel Happ · 2018
Today, to realize the promises associated with the upcoming Internet of Things (IoT), relevant data are usually sent to cloud-based servers for storage and further processing to extract relevant features and enable advanced applications beyond the mere provision of raw data. A recent trend, coined fog computing, is to shift those duties to the network edge, to enable faster, more efficient, and more privacy-preserving services. This chapter provides an overview of the cloud- and fog-based approaches to IoT. Based on this general introduction, a discussion of ongoing and emerging applications and challenges is provided.
