Free and open source software (FOSS) has become a significant segment of the software industry. All the major IT companies have a FOSS strategy and groups of people who work full-time on open source projects. Google has a large and long-standing presence in FOSS communities. Even Microsoft, which for years fought fiercely against FOSS, now supports FOSS including having a marketing campaign with the tag line Microsoft Loves Linux.
