Microsoft’s entry into network directory services should satisfy two sets of users. In the past, most administrators preferred Novell, with its more advanced directory services, because it offered more flexible and easier ways to manage and secure the network. Most end-users, on the other hand, preferred Microsoft, because the Explorer shell made it easy to look around the network and perhaps share files in an informal way. Now, Windows 2000 gives us the best of both worlds: familiar and popular features for users, but with Active Directory to provide the management support.
