W hile the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this docum ent have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon th e q u a lity of the original subm itted.Th e follow ing explanation o f techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction.1.The sign or "ta rg e t" fo r pages apparently lacking fro m the docum ent photographed is "Missing Page(s)".If it was possible to o b ta in the missing page(s) o r section, th e y are spliced into th e film along w ith adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting th ru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you com plete c o n tin u ity , 2. W hen an image on the film is obliterated w ith a large round black m ark, it is an indication th a t the photographer suspected th a t the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You w ill find a good image of th e page in the adjacent frame.3. W hen a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part o f th e m aterial being p h o to g ra p h e d the photographer fo llo w ed a d e fin ite m ethod in "sectioning" th e material.I t is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from le ft to right in equal sections w ith a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again -beginning below the firs t ro w and continuing on u n til complete.4. T h e m ajority o f users indicate that the te x tu a l c o n te n t is o f greatest value, however, a somewhat higher q u a lity reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding o f the dissertation.Silver prints o f "photographs" m ay be ordered at additional charge by w riting th e Order D epartm ent, giving the catalog num ber, title, author and specific pages y o u wish reproduced.
