High-performance 3D NoC bufferless router with approximate priority comparison

This paper presents the design, simulation implementation and evaluation of a novel bufferless Network-on-Chip router that permutes flits based on age approximately instead of accurately. The proposed approach greatly simplifies the design of the router permutation network and flit ejection stage, achieving higher performance and lower area with only slight reduction in network saturation injection rate. Specifically, simulative experimental results show that the proposed router achieves significant performance gains below the network saturation point and also reduced circuit area at a trade-off of very slight reduction in performance above the saturation point compared with state-of-the-art 3D bufferless routers.
