Internet voting: the state of the debate

Thad Hall · Edward Elgar Publishing eBooks · 2015

Over the past 18 years the debate over internet voting has developed from one centered on the theoretical benefits and perils related to its adoption to a debate where real data can be used to inform the discussion. During this time, internet voting trials have been conducted in countries across the world. Although countries such as Estonia and Switzerland are currently using internet voting, fears remain about its feasibility and longevity. This chapter discusses the main trade-offs involved in the debate over internet voting: security of the ballots and the system, and whether voting over the internet limits accessibility for citizens.
