With the steady advances in virtual reality technology, virtual reality shopping environments are predicted to become mainstream applications in the next couple of years. However, it is an open research question how virtual reality shopping environments have to be designed so that customers will quickly adopt them. In this paper, we present preliminary results from an online preference measurement study that uses Paired Comparison-based Preference Measurement to investigate which types of virtual reality specific features and decision support functionalities users require in virtual reality shopping environments. The study examines the design for two different product categories, namely muesli and out-door tents, and tests whether the users’ requirements depend on the respective product category. Our paper presents first empirical results which we will use in the next step within our design process to implement the best evaluated functionality in a running virtual reality shopping environment and test their usability and user experience in a laboratory experiment.
