Open innovation tends to focus on inbound flows of knowledge (West & Bogers, 2014). For outbound flows, the original conception of OI emphasized monetization of those flows through licensing or other payments (Chesbrough, 2003). A limited amount of research has examined non-pecuniary outbound flows (Dahlander & Gann, 2010) in a process of selective revealing (West, 2003; Henkel, 2006), but research in this area has mainly been limited to open source software. Here, we present research on new contexts and mechanisms of non-monetized outbound flows, suggesting conditions under which firms will find it to their advantage to share valuable knowledge with competitors and other companies.
