The mechanisms for transmitting and receiving data on the Internet have shifted. While early protocols and the use of hypertext transport protocol (http) remain in use, web browsers to mobile devices to operating systems increasingly rely upon applications to function. This chapter focuses on the process whereby data has been made accessible and usable by external applications—that of application programming interfaces (APIs).
