Functional safety SoC for autonomous driving

Shinichi Shibahara · 2018

Advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) for autonomous driving requires high computational power. The requirement on functional safety support in ADAS SoCs is getting strict. This paper discusses two topics: implementation and verification for supporting functional safety. The SoC in this paper introduces hardware built-in self-test (BIST), hardware lock-step, and killer-droop monitor for voltage droop prediction as safety mechanism for supporting automotive safety integrity level (ASIL) B, considering area and power constraints. To verify the safety mechanisms efficiently, the hardware BIST operation is emulated by X-injection to flip-flops in RTL simulation. With this approach, the simulation verification speed can be improved by more than 50 times, compared to the gate level simulation with hardware BIST implemented gate netlist.
