Pseudo-Systematic Decoding of Hybrid Instantly Decodable Network Code for Wireless Broadcasting

Instantly decodable network code (IDNC) is a low-cost network coding technique for recovering lost packets at multiple users, where non-instantly decodable packets are discarded without further utilization. In this letter, we extend the encoding and decoding of IDNC, and propose hybrid IDNC (HIDNC). In particular, for decoding, a pseudo-systematic decoding (PSD) method is proposed, where each non-instantly decodable packet is stored and used as its component source packet with smallest packet index, and thus does not need extra cache. For encoding, a problem similar to the encoding of IDNC is formulated and solved by the base policy based partial enumeration algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed PSD-HIDNC could achieve the same completion time performance with random linear network code (performance gap less than 0.1%) while maintaining the decoding complexity in a low level.
