Many manufacturing processes arc three-dimensional (3-D), nonlinear, transient processes in which the areas of computational interest change with time. Automatic finite element analysis (AFEA) with adaptive and dynamic mesh management has the potential to reduce substantially the cost of analysis for problems of this type. A rule-based algorithm for adaptive mesh management for 3-D AFEA is presented. H-refinement and h-coarsening are selected for modifying the spatial mesh. The algorithm has been implemented using FORTRAN arrays and a PASCAL version of a spatially addressable k-D tree.
