Cybersecurity advocates attempt to counter the tsunami of cyber attacks by promoting security best practices. However, little is known about the skills necessary for success and which advocacy techniques are the most effective. My research attempts to fill this gap by exploring the motivations, characteristics, and practices of cybersecurity advocates. The research informs educational recommendations to develop advocates and implications for how successful advocacy techniques can be incorporated into tools and interfaces that promote beneficial security behavior.
