In wireless network, Cognitive Radio (CR) emerges as a solution to improve the spectrum utilization by enabling secondary users (SUs) to exploits the licensed spectrum in an opportunistic way. SUs require vacating the spectrum while a licensed user reclaims the spectrum band. The uncertain primary user (PU) appearance in spectrum band triggers a high channel switching overhead for SUs. In this work, a proactive channel switching framework is proposed to minimize the channel switching during SU transmission. Based on channel usage history of PU, an efficient channel selection method has been devised. CR users proactively predict the future spectrum availability status and accordingly select the best channel for communication. If a PU appears during communication in the selected channel, the SU will switch to the next best channel to avoid harmful interference and resume communication. Simulation results have shown that the proposed method improves the overall throughput by minimizing amount of channel switching in cognitive radio networks (CRNs).
