This paper considers the use of functions of universal hashing based on Reed-Solomon codes and raises the issue of the selection of the authentication function parameters. The need for universal hash functions rises from the authentication requirements of a quantum key distribution. The paper estimated the key consumption efficiency for the hash function based on the Reed-Solomon codes, as well as the maximum overall length of the authenticated messages.
