The objective of this paper is to explain how Xbee radios can be used in Wireless Sensor Networks to acquire and process data in real time using Java. In this paper, the common problems and limitation of using the various configurations of the Xbee have been discussed. The most common configuration of Xbee involves interfacing the Xbee with a microcontroller that has its own shortcoming. Through this paper, we have shown how Java can be used to interface directly with the Xbee radio modules, without the use of a microcontroller. The advantages of this approach, over the traditional configuration have been discussed. Further, it is now possible to process, represent and save the data from the Xbee network in real time.
