Anomaly Detection and Big Data in IPTV Networks

Mohiuddin Ahmed, Md. Niaz‐Ul Haque · 2018

The data in Internet Protocol television (IPTV) networks pose many challenges for anomaly detection. Although IPTV is an increasingly popular service, the future of IPTV lies in the research efforts in handling the challenges raised from big data and several other zero-day activities. This chapter highlights data characteristics in IPTV networks. It contains discussion on anomaly in the context of IPTV networks. Using the concept of hierarchical heavy hitter (HHH) and anomaly in IPTV networks, a robust anomaly detection technique (Tiresias) is proposed by Chi-Yao Hong. The chapter emphasizes the main steps of this technique as a case study. The chapter gives a discussion on big data in IPTV networks. Among the primary tasks of data mining, anomaly detection is the closest to the motivation of data mining as discovering interesting patterns and modelling relationships are the main aims of data-mining research.
