Abstract This paper considers the second‐order leader‐following consensus problem for adelayed multi‐agent systems under general network topologies, in which each agent is a time‐delayed second‐order system with inherent nonlinear dynamics. Based on the pinning control strategy, a distributed control algorithm is proposed to achieve the second‐order leader‐following consensus of multi‐agent systems. Using matrix theory, algebraic graph theory and the free‐weighting‐matrix approach, some sufficient conditions are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities to ensure that all the agents can asymptotically follow the virtual leader. Finally, the effectiveness and the advantages of the developed approach are illustrated by means of simulations.
