IoT solutions gradually enter the operation in our everyday life. Performability assurance is a critical factor in the case if an application has to deal with a large or occasionally extremely large number of users as it is the case of C2B IoT applications. The current paper presents an overview of the problems related to performability dimensioning of IoT systems. Starting from the assessment of different reference architectures extracting the typical common features in IoT (and CPS) applications, the paper identifies the core elements to be reflected in a benchmark-based assessment and comparison of candidate solutions, illustrated by a designated standard benchmark proposed by the TPC. Finally, it presents a flexible mechanism for tailoring a benchmark to the peculiarities of the target field of application and supporting the fine tuning of IoT frameworks.
