Authentication and Access Control for an IoT Green Roof Monitoring System

In the University of Dayton, we have been expanding traditional cyber physical systems with the Internet of Things (IoT) to build a smart campus. The ground breaking project is an IoT green roof monitoring system for environmental surveillance on the roof of a campus building. The IoT monitoring system helps with both student experiential education and data driven analytics on green roof benefits. It also serves as a smart campus research site for other IoT systems. The entire project will be completed in several phases. In this paper, we focus on IoT security in current implementation where the IoT system is attached to campus network. In particular, we explore authentication and credential update schemes for access control to protect both the IoT system and campus network. Moreover, the security features are proposed to keep the IoT system relatively easy to manage by system administrator and students. In this work, the proposed schemes are demonstrated using a BeagleBone board as a IoT node.
